Counterfeit Spirituality Pt.3: Myriad Levels Of Entanglement

Pt.3: Myriad Levels Of Entanglement

March 2010

We see Satan's more recent move against Jesus Christ and much of His representative Body on earth (of whom He is the Head and Saviour Eph 5:23. Col. 1:18) in pushing the Church toward a global spirituality. How are the "change agents" accomplishing this monumental goal?  The deception starts simply but deepens with layers of engagement that move the unsuspecting toward the social agenda of the coming man-centered kingdom.

Found among progressive Emergent churches is an alluring outer garb that entertains, tickle the ears, and feeds the flesh as do the tactics of worldly marketing strategies, and the vulnerable targets are the Christian youth.  The "shuck and jive" image of Emergent enchants the impressionable and holds spellbound those tired or skeptical of traditional church. Take for example churches that sponsor beer brewing nights and poker games or that have pastors who cuss?  How exciting to gather together through vices that have the potential to bring harm rather than gather together for the teaching of the Word of Life?  How comfortable it makes the congregation feel when the mention of sin is avoided. Justifying marketing methods as "seeker sensitive" guarantees worldly enticements will continue.  It's been said that, "What you win them with is what you win them to."

Once "fun church" is established, the unsaved flood into the church bringing phenomenal church growth.  The swelling numbers are then managed through Purpose Driven methods, which streamline the flock making it efficient, easy to monitor, accountable, manned for service and wealthy as the members are unsuspectingly "processed" into tolerance and groomed for politically correct compliance with the "new" global church.

Since doctrine (the teaching of the Biblical Word) is set aside, the yearning for God is met with yet another level of entanglement, one which also entices the faith traditions of the world.  Contemplative prayer, with its spiritualism and mysticism, appear beguiling when seen through mind's eye of man. (There is a way which seems right to man but its end is the way of death. Prov. 14:12) Contemplative prayer, an innocent sounding term to naive Christians, seeks an experience with God (an imagined, conjured anti-Biblical God) through pagan rituals which have become widely established as acceptable Christian practice.  Sadly these techniques summon seducing spirits who deceive the practitioner into thinking they've encountered the true God. The opiate of this movement is mystical meditation that takes captive not only devotees under the Christian banner but followers from the world's religions as well. The ecumenical goal of this mystical contemplation is the uniting of all mankind in a meditative spiritual harmonic, which focuses the fractured divinity (supposedly within each man) into a synergistic energy that will transform humanity into a utopian existence.

After establishing common worship practices with the faiths of the world, the deceived Emergent may descend further into global solidarity through identifying with global concerns. Emergents find just cause for engaging politically and ecumenically under the umbrellas of social justice and environmental stewardship, of which the recent Manhattan Declaration is an example.

Revealing The Core

These layers within the broad Emergent movement shroud the greater goal of creating a harmonious global civilization, government and kingdom.  The heart and soul of Emergent is the building of God's kingdom on earth through the unity of man.  This "dream," for a new era of mankind, will instead help usher in the coming global kingdom of antichrist, the "like Christ," who will deceive the world with lying signs and wonders. It is frightening to consider that unsuspecting spiritual seekers enter into the exciting "entertaining" atmosphere manipulated in Emergent churches only to be later processed, seduced and enlisted for the greater global agenda.  Political correctness, pagan rituals and social concerns serve as connectors to the religions and politics of the world.  Therefore when the door of sin is opened through a "no holds barred" way of "doing" church, when the church allows itself to be transformed into tolerance and social service through Purpose Driven methods, when it seeks experiences with God through ancient mystical rituals, and when it thinks that human unity will synergistically transform the world into the collective Christ consciousness, it is ripe for the strong delusion that will likely "process" them right into the tribulation. When love for the Truth, which brings true salvation is not pursued, God sends strong delusion that those perishing might believe the lie. (2 Thess. 2: 10-12).  Sadly, millions believe lies that bring death because they reject Jesus Christ Who is the Living Truth. 5

Global Governance

It is fascinating that the Catholic Church, through its popes, has been calling for a global governing structure capable of enforcing social justice since the 1950s.  Catholicism is hugely concerned with social justice as evidenced by their unofficially termed "doctrine of need," a principle written about by Thomas Aquinas in Summa Theologea,43 propagated through Vatican II44 and repeated through various papal encyclicals.45 Aquinas differentiated the natural law of the community of goods, held in common by all mankind, while a subsequent "positive law" dealt with the distribution of those goods.  If one owns property or goods in "superabundance," it is said to be only for the sake of succoring the poor. Therefore, the poor can freely take what they "need" from those who have superabundance without considering it theft or sin.

To come full circle, this philosophy is interestingly mimicked by self-professed New Ager, Peter Drucker, who is the organizational mentor of both the Emergent movement and modern business management methods, and who also believed that "needs supersede doctrine."46 Therefore within the Emergent philosophy we see the connection of community sharing, otherwise known as communism, being couched in the realms of religion and business.  Sounds very much like Karl Marx's, "From each according to his abilities, to each according to his need."  Do the Emergents realize who they might be partnering with when they take on global concerns?  While claiming that "God's dream" is meeting the social needs of mankind, man's greatest need is to be rescued from the eternal wrath of God through faith in Jesus Christ's death and resurrection.

Conclusion

Men's hearts are deceptive and  filled with vain imaginations (Jer. 17: 9) that when coupled with the rejection of God, breed pseudo truths that mimic the truth of God, His gospel, His doctrine, and His kingdom. Man's heart conceives that God's gospel is universal and social (the meeting of human needs), knowledge of God is derived from the subjective guidance of mysticism, and the kingdom will be a transcendent communitarian brotherhood of man.

The Herculean project of uniting mankind politically, economically and religiously is well underway and sweeping up progressive Emergents in the process.  Who would vest their hope in men to bring this utopia about since man can't be trusted with money and power, let alone both.  The only hope for such a kingdom lies with Christ who will return to set up a perfect kingdom without stumbling blocks, provide leadership that is incorruptible, and Himself rule as King rendering perfect judicious decisions.

While some Emergents admonish Christians to, "Reinvent yourself for the 21st century or die. Some would rather die than change."47, others challenge Christians by saying; "God is birthing the greatest spiritual awakening in the history of the church....Are you going to show up?"   Our challenge to them is to honestly evaluate their positions to align themselves with the truths of scripture, so they will be part of the true, and soon coming, millennial kingdom of God.

"For many walk, of whom I have told you often, and now tell you even weeping, that they are the enemies of the cross of Christ: whose end is destruction, whose god is their belly, and whose glory is in their shame-who set their mind on earthly things.  For our citizenship is in heaven, from which we also eagerly wait for the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, who will transform our lowly body that it may be conformed to His glorious body, according to the working by which He is able even to subdue all things to Himself." Philippians 3:18-21
